TEam Arena – “Sky’s the limit”

Over the course of three months, representatives from JIBE, Natomas Unified School District, Artists Shane Grammer and Kone Lathipanya as well as community members met semi-regularly over Zoom to discuss the vision for District 1’s Community Mural at Natomas Unified School District, 1901 Arena Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95834. Through discussions, two central themes emerged.

“Our community is super active,” commented Becky Heieck. Jibe is a nonprofit organization that encourages the North Natomas community to walk, bike, and use public transportation. “One of the core beliefs of NUSD is ‘Diversity is Our Strength’, ” shared Jennifer Mellor, NUSD Director of Facilities and Strategic Planning. Natomas Unified hosts the mural at their district offices. With strong points of view from the community, Shane took the concepts and drafted an image.

“We were able to come up with beautiful something very quickly with the community’s input,” Shane Grammar The mural draft was presented to the community via a Zoom meeting. Community Stakeholders and the City of Sacramento reviewed and approved the final design.

The mural painting began Wednesday, October 28, 2021. On November 5th, Shane and Kone presented the details of this mural process to a group of Jibe bicyclists. The mural can be seen by the pathway behind the school, used daily by cyclists and people out for walks.
